Year Group Blogs

Children and Staff in all year groups at Chorlton Park work really hard on making their blogs interesting and exciting. These are regularly updated with information about what’s been going on in the year groups and we’d love it if more parents could visit the blogs and leave a message or comment. There are links to all year group blogs from the Chorlton Park homepage at www.chorltonpark.manchester.sch.uk

We look forward to reading your messages!

Nursery News

Excitingly, Roger will arrive with his bug box on 12th May. This is a thrilling event to which we are counting down. We hope that the children will be able to tell you a lot about the animals and insects once the visit is over.

Number of the week: The number is the one missing in this rhyme: ‘1,2,3,4,?, Once I caught a fish alive’

Do you know which number this is? Can you bring something in for the number table?

Art activity: The final art activity is ‘Wonderful, glorious me!’ Please bring your art work in on Monday 10th May.

Year 3 Writing Project

Over the last term, Year 3 have written and published books relating to their Big Question topics on the Romans. They collaborated on the writing project and have been learning the skills of writing, editing and publishing. This is a great record of the children’s achievements with beautiful photographs. If you would like to buy a copy see the Year 3 class teachers, we are selling them for only £5, or call in at the office.

Year 6 Election Results!!!

As you all probably know, Year 6 have held their own election this week. The results from the returning officer were as follows:

6RH The People’s Party with 34% of the vote

6JG The Eco Friendly Party with 33% of the vote

6MG The Eco Party with 33% of the vote

With no overall majority it looks like we’re going to have to settle for a hung parliament! If you missed the opportunity to vote, please make sure you have a look at the Year 6 blog and post your comments. The party political broadcasts were incredibly persuasive and extremely professional – well done to Year 6.

Class Photos

Just a reminder that the last day to hand in your money at the office for class photos is next Wednesday, the 12th May.

Chorlton Primary Schools Fundraise Together for Children of Haiti

School councillors from Chorlton Park and 6 other Chorlton Primary Schools, handed over a cheque for £6069 (of which £1340.97 was raised by Chorlton Park) to help the children of Haiti affected by the recent  devastating earthquake. We would like to thank children and their families for their kindness and generosity.

New Governors for Chorlton Park

Congratulations to our new parent governor; Ian Devine, and the two staff governors; Ms Wray and Ms Potter.  The current governing body are looking forward to working with you and welcome you to the team.

Children’s Magazines

Year 6 would like any donations of old children’s magazines for the classroom.

Well done to Muiz Ahmed in 6RH who sent up a cartoon drawing to Match Magazine for their Gallery Page and it appears in the current edition.  If you want to see the picture check out the Year 6 Blog.

Year 5 Homework
Thank you very much to all the parents that turned up to the homework forum, it was great to hear your ideas and comments, we will get back to you shortly after the half term break with news about how homework will be run.

Nursery News

Next week’s material of the week is cloth. We will be thinking about who makes our clothes and how they are made. If you have interesting pieces of cloth please bring them along.

Stay and Play week will take place on Tuesday 9th Feb, Wednesday 10th Feb, Thursday 11th Feb and Friday 12th Feb. Parents are invited to participate in activities with their child from 8.50 to 10.30. There are sign up sheets in each Nursery. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to experience your child’s morning and to observe them in the classroom. The children are settling well into their new classes.

Please remember that book bags need to be returned to school on a Monday.

Have a lovely weekend, the Nursery staff.

Internet Use

Parents will be aware that computers are a major part of learning at Chorlton Park, but also that technology can be abused.

We have a good filtering system that allows us to link a name to actions. Recently we were able to track and identify a pupil that left an unpleasant comment on our school blog. This also allowed us to exonerate pupils that were not involved. We want to remind all of our children that they are responsible for what they do if on their mobile phone, e mail or online.

Unfortunately our systems do not protect children at home. The growth of social networking such as Facebook and Twitter and internet enabled mobile phones has meant that the online community is accessible. We would advise parents regularly check on their child’s internet activities.

We have run short workshops on internet safety use and will be willing to run another course if it is required.

Attendance

Parents will be aware from previous letters that we are focusing on pupils with persistent absence (attendance below

80%). We are pleased to say that there has been a significant improvement. Our parent support advisers are doing a fine job in motivating families and children to have good levels of attendance.

The local authority is supporting schools to reduce absence with attendance sweeps. During a sweep, a team will visit all homes where a child is absent on the day of the sweep. There has already been 1 sweep and we expect there will be more in the future.

 Welcome to the School

School Improvements

This summer we have completed the refurbishment of the toilets in the main building to include a disabled toilet.

We have redecorated R2 and 2JS and parts of all of the Year 1 and 2 classrooms as well as R3.  Some of these rooms were finished late in the summer which is why some of the classrooms look a little bare.

The school won some prizes in a blogging award from the National Primary School Blog Championships.  The judges were very impressed by the schools voting and would like to extend their thanks to parents and everyone else involved.

This week our children achieved an overall percentage of 95 % (Nursery not included).

Exciting news! Art club is set to become the Chorlton Park Art Academy. We are very lucky to have some extremely talented artists at school, and we want to celebrate their skills.

We hope that the Art Academy will help teach its members high order art skills using lots of different media, including paint, pastels and even multimedia digital art packages.

We would also like to run a series of Master Classes within the club. We hope to invite visitors with artistic talents to run 2/3 week courses in school to teach the children their skills. We would like to start the Art Academy in earnest in the Autumn Term 2009.

If there are any parents who feel they could offer time to run or assist in running a Master Class; please contact Miss Etchells or Mrs Wood to discuss the details.

We hope that additional places will become available next year and will be putting out a letter early in the new school year.

Upcoming PTA Events:

Caribbean Evening:

Thursday 25th June, 4.30-6.30pm

Summer Fair: Saturday 4th July, 11.00-2.00

It was so good to see so many new faces at the AGM last week. Thank you to everyone for turning out. The major focus of the meeting was to elect a new committee for the coming year. Our deepest thanks to outgoing chairperson David Fox, for bags of ideas and securing vital links between the PTA and school. Big thanks also to outgoing treasurer Rebecca Howard. Since we became a registered charity it’s become an even more crucial job and the PTA couldn’t have done it without her. Luckily for us, she’s staying on as a general committee member. Heartfelt thanks also to outgoing vice-chair Farhana Vohra for her energy, commitment and constant stream of ideas over the years.

Now is a good time for us to thank all the people who help the PTA, from running stalls to selling raffle tickets and those of you who tirelessly come to meetings. Impossible to name you all, but we know who you are and we deeply appreciate all you do.

Your new PTA committee is:

Co-Chair: Angela Keane / Melanie Horton.

Mel – Bethan (4SH) and Rufus (2HD).

Angela – Sadie (3MJ), Alfie (1HS),  Iris (playgroup)

Vice-Chair: Anna Macgowan – Scarlett Hopewell (5HW)

Treasurer: Jeremy Engineer. We’re delighted to welcome him aboard – Gabriella (Reception 3)

Secretary: Justin Hayes. A PTA regular, now roped in for official business. Justin – Ruby Fatimilehin (4RM), Deji Hayes (1HS) and Ella Fatimilehin joining nursery in Jan.

We also elected some general committee members…more info on them to follow.

A final thanks to the school kitchen for the delicious food they laid on for us and to Eva Bermudez for all her work.

Dates to Remember:
Tue 23rd June Year 1 trip to Blue Planet
Year 5 Chorlton High Taster
Thu 25th June Nursery Trip to Knowsley
Mon 29th June 3MJ & ½ 3JE Airport Trip

Contact Details

We have had another sick child with no current contact details who spent a difficult day in school when they should have been at home.  Please can you make sure you keep us up to date with all of your contact details so that we can get in touch in an emergency.

Is the language you speak at home different to English?

Would you like to meet with other parents and the EAL team?

Would you like some cake and a chat?

Whatever language you speak, come and talk to us!

We are also holding a Chorlton Parks Got Talent event next week. The final will take place on Saturday 4th July at the Summer Fair.

We are organising a judging panel for each year group to decide which acts go through. This will be made up of children, staff or a mixture of both.  Please talk to your children about an act they might want to work on for the competition.

Year 5 children have been invited to Chorlton High on Tuesday 23rd June 10.00-12.00.  This is a great opportunity for children to see first hand what secondary schools have to offer.

Chorlton Young Musician of the Year

Well done to Jonah Gourlay who won the primary category of Chorlton Young Musician of the year on Wednesday night.  Congratulations!

Dinner Money

Thank you to all the parents who pay their dinner money on time and in advance.  Unfortunately we still have a few parents who have a lot of debt.  Can we please remind you that dinner money must be paid weekly or in advance.

PTA AGM

Tuesday 9th June

7.30pm onwards (feel free to be late)

Infant Hall

If you can manage to make just one PTA meeting this year, the AGM is one to come to. It would be so good to see some new faces. We’ll report on all we’ve achieved and all we’ve yet to do, listen to your thoughts and ideas, and we’ll be voting in a new committee: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and General Committee Members.

Whether you’re up for a more challenging role or would rather be a bit more behind-the-scenes, there’s a place for you in the PTA. Why not share a role? A small commitment from you can make a big difference to our school and our children. Maybe you could join the Dad’s who pretend to be world-class goal-keepers every year at the summer fair, or you’re a demon with a broom and can spare ten minutes at the end of discos, or you have a hotline to Santa and can help him collect presents for the children.

Dates to Remember:
Mon 25th May Half Term
Mon 1st June Return to school
Fri 5th June 6RH to Trinity CLC
Tue 9th June Year 2 Trip to the Royal Exchange
Thu 11th June Year 2 Trip to the Royal Exchange
Fri 12th June 6MG to Trinity CLC
Tue 23rd June Year 1 Trip to Blue Planet
Year 5 Chorlton High Taster
Thu 25th June Nursery Trip to Knowsley Safari Park

Nursery News

Art activities and Number of the week have now finished.  However, because of the enthusiastic response to these activities we have decided to give you a theme each week to work on with your child if you wish.  In preparation for the safari park trip we would like you to draw, make or find pictures of LAND ANIMALS.

The trip is on 25th June.  Please remember to bring your consent forms back as these are very important.  On the day of the trip packed lunches will only be provided for children who have Free School Meals.  If you pay for dinners you will need to provide a packed lunch yourself.

In the next few weeks we will be holding a reward assembly for all families who completed activities relating to Activity Packs over the year.  There will also be a visit from the Library Service in the hall to which you will be invited.

We hope you have a lovely Half Term and we look forward to seeing you in June!

Or maybe you can spare just an hour a month to come to a meeting and help us make decisions. Whatever you can do, your PTA needs you.

If you’d like to get involved in the committee, please contact one of the existing members, or drop your details into the office. Ideally, we need to know about you before the meeting.

David Fox (Chair): 881 0945 joshellafox@hotmail.com

Mel Horton: mel@rhythmandrhyme.co.uk

Angela Keane:  a.keane@sheffield.ac.uk

Rebecca Howard:  r.howard5800@ntlworld.com

Farhana Vohra: farhanavohra@hotmail.com

(Farhana speaks English/Urdu/Panjabi/Hindi and Gujarati)

Note: drinks and nibbles will be served at the meeting as a bribe nice gesture.

Here’s a short quiz:

Q. What does AGM stand for?

     (a) Annual Gnome Meeting

     (b) Annual Groan Meeting

     (c) Annual General Meeting

A. (c) (But I’d rather go to the first one)

Excellent Behaviour in the Community

This week we received an e-mail from a member of the public I would like to share with the whole school.

Dear Sir or Madam
I was getting the 46 bus this morning and was quite far from the bus stop and one of your pupils saw me coming and held up the bus for me to catch the bus.  He was so polite and caring and I asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up and he said a politician.
I told him he would make an excellent politician as he was a very caring person.  I do hope you can find him and encourage him by giving him the news that you have received an email of good behaviour.

It is extremely encouraging to receive such report about Chorlton Park pupils and I hope this is the behaviour all our pupils aspire to.  It has made us extremely proud.

Parent Support Advisor Coffee Morning

Coffee Morning Friday 3rd April, 9.00-10.00 in the Community Room with the Parent Support Advisors.  Come along and find out more about the Parent Support Advisor, Sharon Drinkwater and her role in school and how she can help you.  Find out what activities you can access for your child over the Easter holiday, most of them are free.

Activity Week

Each year we hold a special activity week in school looking at PSHE

(Personal, Social and Health Education) issues.

In the past we have concentrated on healthy lifestyles and physical activity. This year we are going to look at our emotional well being and particularly at getting the most out of life!

As part of this the children will be thinking about the kind of jobs that they might have later in life and I would very much like to invite parents, carers, family and friends to come into school and share what their job involves.

If you feel that you would be able to volunteer your services OR you would like a bit more information, please come and have a chat with Mrs Blackburn

(Year 4). Don’t worry – you’re not committing to anything!!!

Echos of Nature

One of our parents has an exhibition of sculptured works inspired by nature, which will be of particular interest to Year 5 children who have been looking at sculpture recently.

Charles Dooley from 2AT is also exhibiting some of his own work.

The exhibition is at The People’s Gallery, Start in Salford, Burnswick House, 62 Broad Street, Salford, M6 5BZ and runs from 3rd April to 19th June.  Call 07977 273 382 for more information.

Girls Netball

Well done to the Girls Netball Team who won both matches in the small tournament at Chorlton Park on Tuesday.

Year 6 SATS

We would like to remind parents that the SATs for Year 6 start on 11th May.  In the run up to the SATs please support your child and encourage them to use the resources available:

  • BBC ReviseWise on TV overnight for recording
  • SATs Preparation Course at Trinity High School on Thursday 16th April.
  • The following websites www.coxhoe.durham.sch.uk

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize

www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk

www.primaryresources.co.uk

The school also sell pocket sized revision books in English, Maths and Science for just £1 each.  These proved to be a really successful revision tool for Chorlton Park children last year.

Congratulations to Millie Rae Floyd from 6MG who has won an art award as part of this year’s Manchester International Festival.  Millie has written about her experiences:

On the 19th March I went to a big press launch with Mrs Burgess and Mrs Brooks.  I went because of a design I made of Manchester in 2050.  My design was Manchester underwater from global warming and icecaps melting.  The entries were short listed to 5 and I was one of them.  We went to Urbis and made my design into a 3D model.  My design then won and I was invited to the press launch.  It was basically a proposal of what the festival was going to have in it.  Most of the artists said a speech and showed the audience their brief.  I then stepped up to the stage and said what my idea was all about.  When it had finished I got interviewed by Wythenshawe FM and All FM, then had pictures taken by the Daily telegraph.  It was a great day out and I’m really looking forward to when Noah (who is making my model 10 times bigger) comes in and discusses what we need to do next.

Thanks must go to Mrs Brooks for her work and the support she gave the children with this competition.
