Maths Money Week

Thank you to all the children, parents and carers for making Maths Money Week such a huge success. It appears we have lots of budding entrepreneurs at Chorlton Park! Here are the totals so far, but more money is still coming in. Well done to Year 6 who did their own successful money making scheme to support their Year 6 Production. Year 4 missed the week as they were busy having a wonderful time on their residential. The profits funded a fantastic soccer academy for Years 1-6. Nursery have spent their money on a bridge for their outside classroom and Reception are still making plans on how to spend their money.

Congratulations to Chorlton Park for beating all the other competing schools to win the Zero Waste Award for reducing our waste by the greatest volume. Thank you to Jason Maw and Ramesh Singh from Year 3 who represented our school at the award ceremony in the city centre and who collected the prize of 1 year free recycling from Emerge.

Well done to everyone in school for reducing the amount of waste we produce and let’s aim to maintain it!

Nursery News

Today we say goodbye to Ms McPherson. We will miss her very much and are sad to see her go but we know she will have a brilliant time in Japan. We wish her lots of luck! We also say goodbye to children moving up to Reception in September. We are really going to miss them but well done for being such fantastic children!

Just to let you know, we will pass the book bags onto new Reception teachers or for children coming back in September we will keep them in the Nursery over summer. For the first week back our colour of the week is gold so it would be great if children could bring something in for our display table. From all of the Nursery Staff we would like to say thank you for all your help and support this year, we hope you have a lovely summer!

This week our children achieved an overall percentage of 96% (Nursery not included).

Operation Sunshine: Chorlton School Uniform Recycling Project

Chorlton Park will be taking part in a uniform recycling project with other Chorlton schools. The project will provide school uniform to children in East Africa as well as moving our Sustainable Development agenda in school forward by encouraging reuse and recycling. We will receive a green recycling bin to collect all the items to be recycled, these include: polo shirts, trousers, skirts, paired shoes and sweatshirts. All items need to be clean and in good condition.

Dr Jay Kennedy

Congratulations to Dr Jay Kennedy, Lily Crascall-Kennedy’s dad (5SK) and science historian at the University of Manchester, on his amazing discovery of Plato’s hidden musical code!

Anna and Jacob (5SK) said:

“It was really fun when Dr Kennedy came in to teach us! We learnt a lot. It’s quite exciting that we are friends with his daughter when he’s becoming so famous”

Lily said “I feel very proud of my dad, he has worked so hard. A film crew has come over from Hollywood just for him!”

You can read more about his amazing discovery at the following link: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/news/display/?id=5894

Goodbyes…

As some people already know, I will be leaving Chorlton Park at the end of this term and moving to London to work in a school there. I wanted to say thank you to all of the children, parents and staff who have made my four years here such an exciting and positive experience. I feel very privileged to have met and worked with so many fantastic people at this school. I have learned a great deal and cannot imagine a better school to begin my career at. Although I am ready for the new challenges of a new (and challenging!) school, I am very sad to be leaving and will really miss all the faces and voices that have become so familiar over the years.

Thank you, Jack Sloan.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Mr Watson and Mrs Burgess for giving me the opportunity to work at Chorlton Park. The years have flown by and they have helped me develop professionally and personally. The staff I have worked with both past and present know they are wonderful and I have never had so much fun whilst working so hard. Their support and friendship has been overwhelming and never unappreciated.

Finally, thank you to all of the wonderful families I have met in my time here. Chorlton Park holds a very special place in my heart which will never change. I feel very lucky to have worked in the foundation stage where I have been able to see you often and know you well. The best children in the world have come from the nicest families in the world. I know all the children I have taught and met through forest school and singing club will thrive and I will follow their progress through the years.

Should anyone need a guide in Japan at any time, give me a call. Ms Clarke and Ms Jacklin will always know my number!

With love, Miss McPherson.

A huge well done to all of Year 6 for their fantastic production of Bugsy.

All your hard work and dedication paid off!! You made your parents and teachers very proud.

Year 6 London trip
Just a reminder to Yr 6 parents that we need all children at school by 6.30am. We expect to return to school at around 8.30pm.

There will be no drumming next week so can all children be picked up at the end of the school day as usual. Thank you.

Do you have any books?

Does anyone have any children’s books or any non-fiction books that they would like to clear out? One of our parents, Andrew Read, is collecting these on behalf of a friend at Manchester Refugee Centre. Most of the books will be taken to Eritrea for use in schools and orphanages there.

If possible please bring any donations to the school office by Wednesday 14th July. Thank you.

Music Lessons

If your child learns an instrument with the Manchester Music Service and has not returned their slip indicating whether they will be continuing in September, please can they do so as soon as possible. Thank you.

Zero Waste

Congratulations to Year 3 and all of the work they have done towards reducing landfill waste.

Between Chorlton Park and the other schools involved in the project 1 tonne of waste has been diverted from landfill. Some representatives from year 3 will be going to the town hall on Tuesday next week to collect their award.

Eco-Trip

A group of children from across the school went on a trip on Wednesday to two other schools to find out what they do to make their school more green. We’ve come back with some fabulous ideas and some enthusiastic children!

Staff vs. Girls Netball match
Well done to the Year 6 netball team who played brilliantly against the staff on Monday. It was a very close score line but the girls clinched the lead in the final game. It was a really enjoyable event for all and a big thank you to the staff for playing and to all the supporters.

Sun hats in the reception classes

Our reception classes would appreciate any donations of spare sun hats so that all children can wear hats when outside in the sun. Please bring any donations to the main school office. Thank you

Car Parking

The car park next door will be closed at the beginning and end of the school day to prevent parents parking, following some near misses last week. If you park in this car park you could find yourself locked in.

Maths Money Week

Monday marks the beginning of maths money week in school. Children will be fund raising in every year group. This will hopefully raise economic awareness as well as developing some entrepreneurial skills! There will be competitions going on in each phase for the class that manages to raise the most money. All the money from Key Stage 1 and 2 will fund a really exciting soccer academy next week, and the foundation will be able to choose what they want to do with their money.

Nursery News

Acorn and Oak have had their trips to Tatton Park Farm. This was new for this year and was a really successful visit. The children found the farm fascinating. Thank you to all the volunteers for their vital support. Mrs Burgess would like to thank all staff for all their preparation and they were rewarded by the children’s impeccable behaviour.

Summer Fair

This year’s Summer Fair will be held on Saturday 3rd July and we would love it if parents could bring in any donations of prizes for the raffle.

Girls Netball

A huge well done to the Year 6 Netball Team who came joint first (3rd position overall due to goal difference) at a netball final at Whalley Range. The girls now qualify to play in the citywide finals on Monday 28th June. Please feel free to come and support. More details to follow.

Cake Stall

Year 6 have been running a cake stall this week to raise money for the Year 6 musical production Bugsy Malone. The stall is at the bottom of the Year 6 stairs again next Thursday, please come along and support us. All donations are greatly received!

Year 6 Football

Y6 footballers made it through to the Manchester 7-a-side finals which took place last night. After a superb performance the boys won one and lost one game. Unfortunately this meant they came 2nd place. Still, it has been a tremendous season for us this year. Well done boys!

Family Learning

Every October we organise activities and workshops during Family Learning week for you and your children to take part in. We are constantly trying to improve the range of things that are on offer, so this year our School Council want your ideas and views on how we can make this year the best Family Learning weekend yet! If you have any thoughts / ideas of activities, workshops or events that parents / carers and children can share in together, please let us know.

You can email any ideas to mblackburn@chorltonpark.manchester.sch.uk or leave a suggestion in the parent box in the school office. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Year 6 Leavers

Our Year 6 leaver’s assembly will be on Friday 16th July at 9.15am in the gym, and the Year 6 Leavers Prom will be at the Chorlton Irish Club on Thursday 15th July 6.30-8.00pm. Dress to impress!

Year 6 Graduation Ceremony

This will take place on Thursday 8th July at 2.30pm in the Hall. Children will receive a certificate recognizing their teacher assessment level in Numeracy and Literacy.

End Year 5 with a Splash!

Year 5 Splash sessions will be on Tuesday 13th July 9.30-10.30 5HW, 10.30-10.30 5MW, Wednesday 14th July 9.30-10.30 5SK.

Bring your swimming cossies and a towel.

Bugsy Malone

The Year 6 end of year production, Bugsy Malone, will take place on Monday 5th July at 6.30pm. For people who cannot attend this performance there will be limited spaces available for the performance on Tuesday 6th at 9.15pm. We are asking for a donation for a programme to help with the cost of the production, and to raise funds we will be selling cakes after school near the Year 6 doors on Thursday 17th and 24th June. As we are doing a 1930s production, we would appreciate any assistant/props/costumes that would be suitable.

Houses of Parliament

Year 6 are visiting the Houses of Parliament on Monday 12th July. They need to be in school at 6.45am and will be returning at approximately 8.30pm. Two packed lunches will be needed, as well as enough snacks and drinks for the whole day in a back pack.

Parking on Pavements

We have asked many times but this is a desperate plea for parents to stop parking on the pavement. This week there has been a near miss on the pavement outside the bookmaker across the road. Please be cautious and considerate at all time when driving or parking near school.

We are trialling some new exciting recipes for the rest of the term. We will be asking for feedback from children and parents and finalising the menus for September at the end of the summer term based on this feedback.

The new menus are on the website and in the office and towards the end of the summer term we will be holding parent and pupil forums so please look out for these dates in the newsletter.

Because of these changes will not be using the pre-order meal system we have been using for years 5 & 6. Once the menus are finalised we will be going back to the pre-order system for Key Stage 2.

Swimming is even more fun now it’s FREE!

Well done to Hannah Kennedy who represented Chorlton Park Primary School in the Manchester Schools swimming Grand Final at the Aquatics Centre on Sunday. Hannah came 4th in Butterfly.

If you want to swim at a Manchester pool in the school holidays, it’s FREE to anyone under 16. You need to fill in a “Free Swim registration form” (from your local pool) and give proof that you are a Manchester resident.

Swimming pools in the area are – Moss Side Leisure Centre, Chorlton Baths and Manchester Aquatics Centre.

The School Day

Our school starts at 8.50am when the doors open. We have 2 different morning clubs; however we are aware there are a number of children in the school grounds earlier than this unaccompanied by an adult. Whilst we try to keep the grounds safe, these children are not supervised as they would be during the school day. We would ask that for health and safety reasons therefore that if children are in the playground before the start of the school day, they are supervised by a parent or carer.

Girls v Staff Football

The Girls v Staff Football Match will be held after school on Tuesday 15th June. Please come along to support the teams and cheer. Kick off at 3.45pm.

Job Vacancy

Canoeing in Half Term

On Monday May 31st from 10am – 4pm there will be hour long canoeing taster sessions running on the river alongside Chorlton Water Park where locals can come and try out the equipment and get a feel for canoeing under the supervision of qualified BCU coaches. (£7 per person or £14 for a 3 to 4 person boat….. If you can bring a copy of the newsletter you can have a £1 discount per person) See their website for more details www.messingaboutonthemersey.co.uk (don’t be confused by the canoeing on the Water Park – we will be on the river).

1KJ milk carton recycling

As a result of 1KJ arranging a new carton recycling scheme in school, a photographer has been in from the South Manchester Reporter to take photos of them having their milk. The article will be in the paper either next Thursday or the week after so parents should look out over the half term!

Music Performance

Thank you and well done to all of the children who participated in this morning’s music performance. It was a fantastic show and we hope all of the parents and carers who came in to listen really enjoyed themselves.

Museum of Childhood

This was held in our infant hall this week as part of the Chorlton Arts Festival. We had over 45 visits from outside of the school, amongst whom was an ex pupil who brought her old text books for us to see. Everyone was so interested in the objects on display and the film of the families and children was a great success. Thank you to Su Vosper for organising and making it a very worthwhile event.

Car Park

The car park next door is for the college and they would like to remind parents not to park in their car park in the mornings and the end of the day.

Nursery News

Hooray! It’s half-term. Once we start back on Tuesday 8th June we will be able to start counting down to our trips. Don’t forget – Acorn visit Tatton Farm on 17th and Oak on 24th June. Look out for news and information which will be passed out to you after the holiday. We will be focussing on farm animals after the break – if you have interesting pictures or books about farms we would love to see them. Over the holidays if you would like to keep in touch with us about what you are up to, we will have a post in the blog about ‘Things I did during half-term’. If you wish to make a comment and let us know about the exciting or restful things you are doing together we’d love to read them. The new Forest School Group starts their visits on the first day back which is 8th June. We are sorry about the short notice you received and hope that you remember this great event on the morning.

Nursery will hold World Cup events after the trip is over. Prepare yourself for a little healthy competition between the different Nursery groups.

Finally and most importantly, thank you to every one who turned up on Thursday to hear about the Play Bags. It was the best turn out ever! Your children are all doing really well because of your enthusiasm and will thrive when they move into their Reception classes.

Year 3 & 4 Debating Society
On Tuesday 8th of June, the Society will be debating ‘This house believes that children should be able to make their own rules for their own room.’ Any children wishing to join us need to see Mrs Griffith for a letter or bring a letter from parents on the day to say they have permission to stay.

This week our children achieved an overall percentage of 95% (Nursery not included).

Lord Mayors Party

Olivia (5MW) and Sagesse (5HW) represented the school at the Lord Mayors music party on Friday 14th May. We had a great afternoon, singing and dancing with children from all over the city and to top it off we enjoyed cup cakes and drinks!

Here you can see Olivia and Sagesse with Manchester’s High Sherriff.

Huge thank you to Lenny Lewis

We’d like to thank one of our parents Lenny Lewis who has been a Community Governor for Chorlton Park since 2006 and has now finished her term on the Governing Body. Her hard work and dedication has contributed to the school’s successes over the years, and she will be sorely missed. Lenny has played a particularly large role in both the areas of safeguarding and gifted and talented. Thank you!

Nursery News

Next week’s number is the one we would write to show many legs an insect has. Do you know which number this is?

You should have received a letter about the Nursery trips which will be on 17th June for Acorn Nursery and 24th June for Oak Nursery. Please remember to send your consent forms back by Friday 28th May.

Play bag sessions will be on Thursday morning at 9.00am and Thursday afternoon at 2.30pm for those parents whose children are moving to Reception in September.

Thank you to all of the parents who stayed on Thursday for their art activity presentations. It was lovely to see you all. Well done for working so hard on your artwork.

As the weather is warm now, please send in a hat for your child (labelled with a name).

There are a lot of items on the Nursery blog for you to check out. You can access the blog via the main Chorlton Park website page. Please let us know if you have problems accessing the site.

National Beat Box Conference

This week, MC Humphreys and MC Khan attended the National Beat Box Conference at the Contact Theatre. They will now be working closely with Sing Up, so watch out for new musical talents in your children’s performances.

Sun Protection

As the weather is becoming sunny and hot, we would like all parents and carers to think about being sun safe. In school already the children do not spend a long time outside in the sunshine, and are encouraged to stay in the shade.

We would ask that children have all day sun cream applied before school, as staff are not allowed under safeguarding regulations to apply creams to the children. We also wish to encourage the children to wear sun hats when outside, as well as sensible clothes and shoes for the weather.

Chorlton Park Music

As a little treat for the last Friday of this half term (28th May), some of Chorlton Park’s musicians will be performing in the main school hall in the morning from 8.50am. After you’ve dropped your child off if you fancy having a listen then please come and join us. We look forward to seeing you there!

Arabian Nights

On Tuesday 25th May Year 5 will be performing in Arabian Nights as part of the Chorlton Arts Festival. If you have not got your ticket yet, please hurry as they are selling fast. Contact the Blue Box theatre box office on 0161 882 1150.

Forest School

We are making some changes to the year 1 playground near the allotment and planting lots more hedging and small trees near the road to create a mini wood. We are planning to balance this out by opening the other end of that playground near the train by removing one or two trees. What’s great about this design is that we will be able to re-use all the wood from the trees- in the form of logs, tree stumps and wood chippings. This will create a natural environment for mini beasts, and area for children to explore and play in.

There is no dance club on Monday 24th May

The Gardens in Nursery and Reception are part of the outside classroom, and we would appreciate it that at the end of the day that the children with parents respect this environment please.

We’re pleased to inform parents that Chorlton Park has been designated as a National Support School by the National College, and Mr Watson has been appointed as a National Leader of Education.

This means that Mr Watson and the team at Chorlton Park have been chosen to provide additional leadership and flexible support in other struggling schools in order to share best practice and raise standards.

New Debating Societies

Two new debating societies will be starting shortly. The Yr. 5&6 one will begin this coming Monday and the Yr. 3&4 one will start on Tuesday May 24th. Both will run from the end of school until 4.30pm and will continue for five weeks. Further details can be obtained from Mrs Griffith (6JG), if a letter has not made its way to you.

The Museum of Childhood Needs Volunteers

Next Sunday 23rd May the specially created Museum of Childhood will be launched at 4.00-6.00 pm in the Infant Hall as part of the Chorlton Arts Festival. The Exhibition, which explores how objects can trigger memories through film and story telling as well as the objects themselves, will continue to the Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th May from 10.00am-3.00pm. Thank you to families and their year 5 children who have been involved. If anyone can help out with volunteering over those days please can you leave your name with the office as we need around 10 more people in total. Alternatively e-mail Su on: judd.su@bthoenworld.com

Thank you. The Museum of Childhood needs you.

Zero Waste at Chorlton Park

We are gearing up for Zero Waste Week (28th June-2nd July), with lots of green activities going on across the school…

As a result of their materials project, 1KJ were astonished to find out that although our milk cartons are cardboard, they can’t go in with the normal cardboard recycling. As a result of this, they have been in contact with Enterprise Manchester and are arranging a tetra pack recycling scheme for the milk cartons. Well done to 1KJ!

This week Year 3 have been on their class trips to the Waste Works, taking part in activities about recycling, playing games and getting thinking about the waste that families produce. Ayah Albakri in 3JE said ‘we got to make our own paper out of old recycled paper and we wore hard hats and got to see the recycling machine. The teacher made paper smoothies showing us how to recycle paper. We all made environmental promises’.

3MJ have collected one day’s worth of waste in their classroom and it came in weighing 825g – they are hoping to work towards cutting this down in time for Zero Waste Week.

We’re all looking forward to Zero Waste Week, and there’ll be lots more activities in the upcoming weeks in preparation for this. Look out for further updates soon.

Chorlton High ICT Masterclass
Last week, four children from this school attended an ICT masterclass at Chorlton High School – Sankalp Soni (4DM), Nadeem Ahmed (6JG), Trystan Seaton (6JG), Samiyah Akhtar (6JG). Well done to them and thanks to Chorlton High once again.
