These are regularly updated with information about what’s been going on in the year groups and we’d love it if more parents could visit the blogs and leave a message or comment. There are links to all year group blogs from the Chorlton Park homepage at www.chorltonpark.manchester.sch.uk

We look forward to reading your messages!

Nursery News

Excitingly, Roger will arrive with his bug box on 12th May. This is a thrilling event to which we are counting down. We hope that the children will be able to tell you a lot about the animals and insects once the visit is over.

Number of the week: The number is the one missing in this rhyme: ‘1,2,3,4,?, Once I caught a fish alive’

Do you know which number this is? Can you bring something in for the number table?

Art activity: The final art activity is ‘Wonderful, glorious me!’ Please bring your art work in on Monday 10th May.

Year 3 Writing Project

Over the last term, Year 3 have written and published books relating to their Big Question topics on the Romans. They collaborated on the writing project and have been learning the skills of writing, editing and publishing. This is a great record of the children’s achievements with beautiful photographs. If you would like to buy a copy see the Year 3 class teachers, we are selling them for only £5, or call in at the office.

Year 6 Election Results!!!

As you all probably know, Year 6 have held their own election this week. The results from the returning officer were as follows:

6RH The People’s Party with 34% of the vote

6JG The Eco Friendly Party with 33% of the vote

6MG The Eco Party with 33% of the vote

With no overall majority it looks like we’re going to have to settle for a hung parliament! If you missed the opportunity to vote, please make sure you have a look at the Year 6 blog and post your comments. The party political broadcasts were incredibly persuasive and extremely professional – well done to Year 6.

Class Photos

Just a reminder that the last day to hand in your money at the office for class photos is next Wednesday, the 12th May.

Home Use of the Internet

In school, we have an Acceptable User Policy, and monitor children’s use of the Internet closely. We are aware that many children now have Facebook accounts at home. We are aware of some issues in school regarding unpleasant comments made on these sites and because of this we have arranged another Internet Awareness/Social Networking workshop on Wednesday 19th May at 2.30 in the ICT Suite.  However, please talk to your children about these issues and feel free to come in to talk to us one any of these issues. Thank you for your support.

5SK would like to thank Professor John Kennedy (Lily’s Dad) who came to wow us with his knowledge and understanding of Ancient Greece.  He inspired the children and made history come alive for us, check out the Year 5 Blog to find out more.   The other year 5 classes are really looking forward to see him next week.

It is wonderful that so many of our parents give up their valuable time to come into school and share with us.  We are really fortunate that we have lots of parents coming in week in week out. It is one of those things that makes this school so successful.

“Thank you for giving up your valuable time to come in and get us really motiviated about our topic.”  – Maha

School Meal Pre-Order Pilot

Feedback has come in from Year 5 and 6 and the pilot has been really successful.  We are now looking at how to roll this out to the whole of Key Stage 2.  It took us some time to get the system up and running and in order to be well prepared we are planning to have the pre-order system working for year 3 & 4 as well after half term.

Photographs

Nursery and Reception photographs have now been rearranged to Monday 26th April.

WWF’s Earth Hour 2010

Wear Something Bright – turn off the light

On Saturday 27th March at 8.30pm, people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour, WWF’s Earth Hour, to show their support for the planet. In 2009 hundreds of millions of people in 88 countries took part in Earth Hour by turning of their lights, and this year the WWF is hoping to reach 1 billion people in 1000 cities. You too can take part at home, there are resources on the website at http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk/about_earth_hour/

They list ideas such as hosting a ‘Be Bright Quiz’ by candlelight. The school is in the process of planning various fundraising activities for after the Easter break – watch this space!

Book Donation

This week Chorlton Park has kindly received a donation of over £200 worth of brand new books for the school library from TMFortis solicitors. The donation was brought in by Laila Tufail’s (2AT) dad. We are extremely grateful for this amazing and very generous gift and are sure the children will love reading their new books! There are some fabulous books particularly for our older readers. Some of the really popular titles include the Harry Potter box set, Twilight, Checkmate, Noughts and Crosses and the Inkheart trilogy. Thank you again Mr Tufail!

Manchester Duck Race

Good Friday 2nd April 2pm

Irwell Square, Leftbank, Spinningfields

The Manchester Duck Race is a great new event coming to Spinningfields this Easter – we’re going to be hosting a Duck Race on the River Irwell at Spinningfields in aid of local children’s charity, Brainwave.
The Duck Race is going to be a lovely family event with lots of fun activity on the day, including face painting with some great prizes to be won. We will be selling ducks by a raffle ticket format when people pay for a duck. They get a numbered ticket which corresponds to a duck which will be entered directly into the race. Ducks are just £1 and can be bought on the day of the race or to avoid the queues; ducks will be available at any of the Spinningfields retailers or online at www.spinningfieldsonline.com We hope that you will support the cause and join in on all the fun at the race!Brainwave help children with developmental delay reach their full potential; if you would like more information on the charity please visit www.brainwave.org.uk Full details of the event and updates will be posted at www.spinningfieldsonline.com

Philosophy at Chorlton Park Children from years 5 and 6 worked with Peter Kennedy again this week on Philosophy through Drama. They were joined by children from Oswald Road. The children enjoyed thinking about the past and the kind of world we could face in the future.

80th Celebrations (A past with a future)

Chorlton Park has been serving the local community for the last 80 years. During that time the school has changed. We want to celebrate the schools achievements by learning about our past and charting our future.

Are you aware of the year of the flood and fire? Or that Chorlton Park was once 2 separate infant and junior schools. Maybe you have some other information. This summer we are planning a series of events to celebrate our 80th year.

We want to hear from you: Grand parents, Parents, Governors, and past pupils. If you would be willing to share your story about our school over the last 80 years, please contact the school by email to head@chorltonpark.manchester.sch.uk

We will then contact you and capture your views.

Attendance

We are pleased that attendance is improving at such an impressive rate. This is down to all of our families making a special effort. As the summer term approaches, we do not want to lose momentum and would ask parents to continue to work with us to achieve good attendance.

The school target for every pupil is 95% attendance. Please make sure that absences including holidays are approved before you arrange them. We will not authorise absences of attendance that is below 80%

The local authority will continue their attendance sweeps. If you have a query, speak to the school.

Have a safe and enjoyable Easter break and we look forward to seeing you on Monday 12th April.

Dates to Remember:

A message from Mr Watson

Mr Watson will be working as an executive head teacher at both Chorlton Park and Old Moat School till the end of the summer term. We want to assure you that this will not have any effects on teaching or your child’s school experience.

PTA News

Thanks to all for a successful second hand book sale. We made £120.23, finding new homes for around 500 books with donations also to classrooms and COSH. Oxfam were grateful for the 5 boxes of leftovers. The next book sale is at the summer fair on Saturday 3rd July.

Sport Relief

Thank you to those who sponsored the Chorlton Park School Runners. Louie, Martha, Harry, Alfie, Leo, Oscar, Ana, Conor and various grown ups ran their miles and Ben finished his 3 miles in a cracking 30 minutes. So far we’ve raised around £700 but with at least £400 more pledged, we’ll have beaten our target of £1000. Look at our page at www.mysportrelief.com/chorltonparkrunners for a photo of some of the team. It was a fantastic sunny day and the atmosphere was great. Let’s get a bigger team together in two years time.

Year 3 Rugby Players

Alfie, Daisy and Harry played for Didsbury Toc H Rugby Club against Chester during the interval of the Shale Sharks game on Friday 19th March. It was a close game, but Chester won 4 tries to 2 in the end. The club trains on Sunday mornings at Ford Lane, Didsbury. Visit www.didsburyrfc.co.uk for more information.

Please bring your next pieces in on Monday 12th April.

We will be having a number table next half term. The first

number is ‘The one after 7 and before 9’. If you discuss this sentence with your child and see if they can work out which number we are talking about and make a picture of that number on a door, or photo of that number on a door, or draw that number of things – we will put it on our new number table. Last year everyone was very imaginative and found our numbers everywhere. Thanks to Beth and Zach for their help this week.

Have a lovely holiday, let’s hope the sun shines on us every day. All of our bears deserve a rest after a busy term. See you soon, The Nursery Staff.

Year 5 Assembly- Congratulations to year 5 for a truly epic and moving assembly this morning on a theme ‘What is freedom’. Special thanks to all of the children and staff, particularly Mrs Khan for her contribution to this year’s performance.

Parking Issues:

 Message from the School Council

The school council and Mrs Blackburn are worried about parents parking outside of our school and driving on the pavement. It is causing chaos and is putting children’s’ lives in danger. So can you please take responsibility and park elsewhere. It will be a lot safer for everyone and easier for us in lots of ways.

Thank you Jess, Grace and Maha (School council)

On Thursday 18th March 2 pupils from the school council, Connain from 5MW and Owen from 6MG, had a meeting with Mr Watson and quizzed him about the parking situation at school.

The boys asked Mr Watson what his ideas were, and also presented him with a fantastic range of possible ways to tackle the problem. Connain and Owen suggested holding a poster competition for ‘Don’t park here’, putting information on the blog, and giving out leaflets to parents at the end of the day to persuade people to park elsewhere. The children are also considering getting in touch with local politicians and press. The school council are developing these ideas, and Mr Watson has asked Connain and Owen to put together a plan of action which they can then work through with his support.

Mr Watson said that he understood the trouble parents were having. Nevertheless, he did say that if some parents who lived closer to school could start walking rather than driving, this would free up space for parents who live further away and have to drive. The school needs to work on the problem of parking, as the safety of the children is extremely important.

Football

Congratulations to our football team, who won the semi-final of the Wetton trophy last night 5-4. Good luck for the final! Details to follow…

All after school clubs except for Grass Roots on Friday will be cancelled due to Parents Evening. Can all children who normally go to after school clubs please be picked up at the normal time, thank you.

Chorlton High Master Classes

Five children from years 4-6 attended a science master class at Chorlton high School this week. They were: Felix Dubicki-Piper (Year 4), Peter Mitchell and Louis Hadoke (Year 5), and Michael Day and Hader Khan (Year 6). Many thanks to Chorlton High School for providing them with such an exciting opportunity.

Philosophy and Drama

On March 3rd, eighteen children from Years 5 and 6, plus six children from both Oswald Road and Chorlton C of E, were treated to a very challenging and stimulating session of philosophy and drama led by one of our parents, Peter Kennedy. The children were very inspired by the time they spent with Peter and are looking forward to a follow-up on March 24th. Many thanks to Peter for challenging these children to think so deeply.

Nursery News

Just a reminder that the library service story session will take place in the Infant Hall on 23rd March at 2.30pm. This session is for children in the Nursery, their parents and younger siblings. Please sign in at the Office between 2.15pm and 2.30pm and come down to the Hall as this should be a lot of fun.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week, the nursery will join together on the yard for wake-up gym as part of our Sport Relief activities. We will do this immediately after register time and it would help us if everyone gets to school promptly so that we can get active! On Friday we will be doing circuit activities for a much longer session. Children can come in sporty outfits on that day – we will be collecting donations for sport relief in the classrooms.

If you have been waiting for activity packs since the stay and play sessions before half-term you will be given the pack during your parent-teacher interview meeting next week, as the packs have finally arrived.
Sadly, Oak and Acorn nursery say a fond farewell to Mrs Jamal today. Whilst we are happy to welcome Miss Ledwick into the Hedgehog group, the Nursery and the school  will miss Mrs Jamal and hope she can come and visit us soon.

Have a lovely weekend, and to all of our mums – Happy Mothers Day. The Nursery staff.

Speedmark Challenge

Thank you to everyone who helped raise money during the Speedmark Challenge last Thursday and Friday especially Jayden Bell in 1KJ who raised a staggering £300! It was a great couple of days and all involved really enjoyed it.

Writing Competition

A reminder that entries for the writing competition need to be sent to Ms Boyle or Mrs Griffith by Monday of the coming week (15th). The task was to write a story set in the future, based on the idea of exploring a new planet. Prizes will be awarded within the relevant phases.

Football

March is proving a very successful month for football at Chorlton Park.

Yesterday the Year3/4 6 a side football squad won all of their games in a tournament at Whalley Range High School. They came home with the shield and each received medals. As champions, they will now go in to the area finals to face winners from similar tournaments across Manchester.

Congratulations to Matthew Argent-Barnes, India Sangar, Hattie Midgley-Stevens, Josh Fox, Jeevan Bharda-Singh, Daniel Lewis, Taimur Amer, Daisy Wood and Billie Carr-Woodburn.

Also the Year 6 team has progressed well in the Wetton Trophy and play in the semi-final next Thursday (18th March). The match will take place on the park and kick off will be 4pm. We hope as many children and parents/carers can be there to cheer on the team in what promises to be a thrilling encounter against St Anthony’s.

Parking

Just a reminder to park considerately. We have had a complaint from a neighbour, saying that her car was blocked in her driveway when a parent came to collect from school. We know that there are parking restrictions at the moment that are making the situation worse, but please set off 5 minutes earlier, so that you can find somewhere appropriate to park. Thank you.

Maths workshop

The maths workshop for Years 3 and 4 will be held on Tuesday 9th March. There are two time slots at 9.30-10.30am or 6.00-7.00pm. Please note that the venue has changed and the workshops will now be held in 4BH’s classroom.

Sport Relief – Friday 19th March

As usual in Chorlton Park we will Rise to the Challenge and raise some money for Sport Relief by exercising and having fun. We are going for the Chorlton Park ‘Marathon’.

All year groups (Reception to Year 6 – Nursery will be doing something in the Nursery gardens) will start in the Gym at 9.15am with a warm up and then we will be walking/jogging/running various routes around the park. When all the distances are added up they should equal a marathon. We would like the children to wear sport clothes and if possible keep to a red and white theme. Official Sport Relief clothes, socks and accessories are available from TKMaxx, Sainsbury’s and online. We are asking for a donation of 50p please. I’m afraid there won’t be enough room for parents and spectators in the gym but you are more than welcome to watch and support in the park.

Thank you – Mrs Lamb and Miss Humphries.

Parents (You said……….. we are doing)

Parents and carers will remember our recent whole school survey. The results were sent out a few weeks ago.

Whilst the results were overall very positive, we realise that there is still room for improvement. We promised that we would revisit the areas that were below 80% satisfaction and look more deeply into these areas, then to develop an action plan for improvement so that satisfaction percentages will be at least 85%.

The areas were:

  1. Provision for Gifted and talented pupils 76%
    1. Provision for special needs (SEN) 63%
  2. Behaviour (which was at 80%)

To ensure that we get your responses we have asked 2 parent governors Janet Macdonald and Tracey Langley to coordinate the gathering of views. They will of course treat all responses confidentially. To contact them please either:

  1. Send a letter to the office for their attention
  2. Send your contact details to the office for their attention

We know this approach works because previous feedback from parents has for example improved schools meals, and the playground equipment. We are open to ideas and welcome constructive comments to improve our school. We will do all within our powers to address any concerns raised and will keep parents informed of developments.

Attendance

Next week children with 100% attendance for the first half term will be receiving an award badge. Badges will also be given for good effort. This will continue every half term. Thanks to all the parents for co-operating and improving their child’s attendance.

School Meal Menu for next week – Week 1

National Sing-Up Day is on Wednesday 24th February. On this day, all of the children will be joining schools across the country in a nationwide event in a Guinness World Record attempt. The purpose of the event is to promote sing-up which is a government initiative to encourage children to sing more. At 3pm on 24th February, Foundation stage and Year 1 will gather in the Infant Hall, Year 2-4 in the Dining Hall and Nursery children will stay in the Nursery to sing. When you come to collect your children, you are invited to come and join in with us before you take them home at the usual time of 3.20pm. This should be a very exciting event, please support us in it by arriving slightly early on that day so that you can sing with us if you wish!

Year 4 trip to 21cc

Please look out on the blog for the work the children have been doing as a result of their trip to 21cc last week. The BBC will also be including some of this work in their website within the next few months. We will keep you updated.

SpeedMark Challenge

Just a reminder that the sponsored SpeedMark challenge is taking place on Thursday 4th march (Year 4, 5 and 6) and Friday 5th March (Yrs 1, 2 and 3).

Safety Concerns

Over the last week the police have been present at the beginning and end of the day outside school. They have found the situation some parents are putting their children in to be extremely dangerous, because of this they are coming in the first Monday back to talk to the children in KS1 and 2 assemblies regarding parking and road safety. If you are one of the parents who are continuing to park on the yellow zigzag lines, it is you the police will be focusing on next term. Thank you for all the parents who continue to put children’s safety first by parking elsewhere.

After Half Term, the staff will no longer be able to park in the car park, meaning they will be parking on the road outside school.

Year 5 students and families….Would you like to help me / be involved in a film/arts project?

I am a parent with children at Chorlton Park, who is running an arts project called the ‘The Museum of Childhood’.  This project will end with an exhibition for the Chorlton Arts Festival in May 2010.

The project is about how objects can conjure up memories from /of childhood, and I am interested in working with ten families from Chorlton Park (with children aged 10 years/’rising ten’).

If you have a short story to tell about one object that is important to you and why, and are interested in the film-making process please contact me for more information!

You can email me at judd.su@btopenworld.com  or leave a message for me via the office.

Year 4 Castleton Residential Meeting

Year 4 parents should have already received a letter early this week regarding the Castleton meeting which will be held on the first Tuesday back after half term – Tuesday 23rd February. To enable as many parents and carers as possible to come, we will be running it three times over the day – 9.15am, 3.30pm and 6.30pm. This will be an opportunity for us to share important information regarding the residential. We hope to see as many of you as possible.

Nursery News

All the Nursery staff and children wish Miss Wilson Bon Voyage. We are very sad that she won’t be here but very happy that she will get to travel around Australia. At the same time we are happy to welcome Ms Opdam into our school. In the week after half term we will be focusing on ourselves, our groups, our nurseries and our families. Each child can bring in their favourite Fairy tale from home for us to read out to the class. Please remember to tell us that the book is in school and label it with their name. Finally, enjoy half-term week. We hope you have fun and come back safely after a well deserved break.

On Saturday 6th February Hannah, Eve and Billie from Year 6 went on a course at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Hannah and Eve went on a fashion designing course and customized their own t-shirts with spray paint. Billie went to a drama workshop where she wrote a play script and performed it. All the girls really enjoyed their day and thought it was fantastic.

St Bedes v Chorlton Park Y6 football

Monday night saw the postponed cup match between these two great teams. The match was a rollercoaster ride for the spectators; on the 89th minute C.P.P.S were out of the cup loosing 2-1. With the last kick of the game we equalised and took the game to extra time. We eventually won 2-5, but this was the toughest game so far this season. The boys showed great character to come back twice and finally win. Well done boys, we await to see who we play in the next round!!

Well done to all the children who took part in the Police Bike Safety course. The children who took part have been asked to create some posters and letters that could be displayed in the Police Station!! The police will be in school next half term to hand out a prize to one lucky winner Thank you to all those who helped out!
